Hi, I don't know what kind of camera you have, but I started out with a canon 100mm lens with a maximum magnification of 1:1, which is great to start out with, and this one I made with a canon MP-E 65mm 1-5 x magnification, it's quite expensive and difficult to use (and a flash is definatly needed). If you're just starting I'd suggest the 100mm lens. Or the reversed lens technique, I've never used it but I've heard it's a cheaper way to do macro photography. But you would need to look through the forums on how that works exactly!
